From October, anyone working in a Care Quality Commission-registered care home in England must have two vaccine doses unless they have a medical exemption.
The government announced plans to make the COVID-19 vaccine mandatory for care home staff in a press release on 16 June; MPs approved the new regulation in the House of Commons on 13 July 2021. There will be a 16-week grace period to enable staff who haven’t been vaccinated to take up the vaccine.
The new legislation means from October – subject to Parliamentary approval and a subsequent 16-week grace period – anyone working in a CQC-registered care home in England for residents requiring nursing or personal care must have 2 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine unless they have a medical exemption.
The requirement will apply to full or part-time agency staff, workers employed directly by the care home or provider, and volunteers working with residents. Those coming into a care home to do other work, such as healthcare workers and CQC inspectors, will also have to follow the new rules.
HC-One, which runs 326 care homes in the UK, has revealed it is planning to make the Covid-19 vaccine a condition of employment for all of its staff across the UK from 13 September.
